What to bring on a water tour

The ultimate packing list to get it right and enjoy the sea worry-free

Packing for a day at sea doesn't have to be complicated, but there is a handful of things that make the difference between an amazing day and wishing you had come better prepared. In Puerto Vallarta the sun is strong and the water is spectacular, so we put together this practical list to help you arrive ready for your tour. Best of all: it's shorter than you think, because we already take care of the heavy stuff.

What you should bring

Here are the essentials we recommend packing in a light backpack or waterproof bag before you step aboard:

  • Swimsuit, worn under your clothes. Show up already wearing it so you don't waste time changing on board.
  • Towel. Light and quick-drying, perfect for the sea.
  • Biodegradable sunscreen. This is the single most important item on the list. Many of our destinations are protected natural areas, and regular sunscreens damage the corals and the ecosystem. Using biodegradable sunscreen (free of oxybenzone and octinoxate) is essential to protect the sea and comply with park rules.
  • Cap or hat. To shield your face and head from the direct sun.
  • Sunglasses. Ideally with a strap so you don't lose them in the water.
  • Waterproof camera or a waterproof case for your phone. You'll want to capture everything, and this way you can do it worry-free.
  • Cash. Handy for tipping the crew, souvenirs or any extra you might want to buy during the day.
  • A change of dry clothes. You'll be so glad you brought them once the tour wraps up.
  • Sandals. Comfortable for walking on the beach and the dock.

What you DON'T need to bring

Here's the good news that lightens your load: several things are already included, so don't overpack.

  • Snorkeling gear. We provide the mask, snorkel and fins on our snorkeling tours.
  • Life jackets. They're always on board for the whole family, kids included.
  • Cooler and cold drinks. On several of our tours we bring a cooler on board to keep your drinks and snacks chilled; ask us what the tour you choose includes.

Tips based on the tour you choose

Every adventure has its own little details. Here are some specific recommendations so you arrive even better prepared:

  • Snorkeling at Los Arcos. The water is crystal clear but cool; if you feel the cold easily, a rashguard or lycra top will keep you comfortable while you explore the caves and arches.
  • Marietas Islands. As a national park, biodegradable sunscreen is mandatory. Pack light, because you reach Hidden Beach by swimming.
  • Nighttime bioluminescence tour. Temperatures drop at sea after dark, so bring light but warm layers (a hoodie or windbreaker) and something to cover your legs.
  • Fishing tour. A cap, strapped sunglasses and sunscreen are key for the hours under the sun. If you get seasick easily, take a motion-sickness tablet before setting off.

Safety recommendations

  • Always follow the crew's instructions before and during the tour.
  • Wear a life jacket if you're not a strong swimmer or if you're traveling with children.
  • Stay hydrated: the sun and the sea dehydrate you more than you'd think.
  • Keep your valuables in a waterproof bag and avoid bringing anything you don't need.
  • If you take medication or have any medical condition, let us know when you book so we can take better care of you.
