Best time to see whales in Puerto Vallarta

When humpback whales arrive and how to experience the sighting responsibly

Every winter, the waters of Banderas Bay become the stage for one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles on the Mexican Pacific: the arrival of the humpback whales. If you're planning your visit to Puerto Vallarta, knowing the best time and what to expect from the tour will help you enjoy an unforgettable sighting.

When is whale season in Puerto Vallarta?

The official humpback whale season in Banderas Bay runs roughly from December to March. During these months, hundreds of whales travel thousands of kilometers from the cold northern waters to the bay to spend the winter. The peak months, January and February, usually offer the greatest concentration of whales and the best chances of a sighting.

It's worth noting that no date guarantees a sighting 100% of the time: it all depends on the sea conditions and the presence of the whales that day. Even so, during the season the chances of seeing them up close are very high, and every trip is a different experience.

Why do the whales come to the bay?

Humpback whales travel to Banderas Bay in search of its warm, calm waters, ideal for mating and giving birth to their calves. Here, sheltered from the surf and from predators, the females nurse their newborn calves through their first weeks of life, while the males court and compete with their signature songs and breaches. That's why it's common to see mothers swimming alongside their calves — a moment that moves everyone who witnesses it.

Tips for the best sighting

To make the most of your day at sea, keep these tips in mind:

  • Bring your camera: even though we give you digital photos, you'll always want to capture your own moment when a whale breaches nearby.
  • Pick the best hours: morning departures usually have the calmest sea and the best light for watching and photographing.
  • Prevent seasickness: if you're prone to motion sickness, take your medication before setting off, avoid heavy meals and keep your eyes on the horizon.
  • Bring a light layer: out at sea the wind can feel cool, even on a sunny day.
  • Use biodegradable sunscreen to protect the marine ecosystem.

Responsible whale tourism

Banderas Bay is a protected sanctuary, and watching whales carries a real responsibility. All of our trips follow the official rules: we keep the minimum distance, limit observation time and never chase or surround the animals. This is how we make sure these species keep visiting our waters year after year.

If your trip falls outside whale season, don't worry: Puerto Vallarta has wonders all year round. One of the most popular options is the tour to the Marietas Islands and their famous Hidden Beach, another natural treasure you can enjoy any time of year.
